Vicente Fernandez Exitos Viejitas
Vicente Fernandez Exitos Lyrics
In the '50s and '60s, vocal groups were extremely popular in Mexico; Los Panchos, Los Tres Ases, El Trio Calaveras, and, of course, Los Dandys. It was music of an amazing purity, based on vocal harmonies and acoustic guitars, usually songs about unrequited love and the bittersweet travails of romance. In this 1999 album, Vicente Fernandez pays a more-than-justified homage to the music of Los Dandys, accompanied by original member Guicho Cisneros and the group's current incarnation. Known for the titanic power of his vocal chords, Fernandez is unusually subdued here, lowering his range so as not to overshadow the tenderness of the songs. The selection of tunes is impeccable as well, including treasures from the Mexican songbook such as 'Cerca del Mar,' 'Gema' and 'Alma de Cristal.'
